Sydney

The Whitsunday Islands have nearby Proserpine Airport which offers flight connections to Sydney.

In Sydney free city walks are offered and I used one which was called “I’m Free”. The company runs on the tips which are given by the tourists. So a relaxed way to start to explore the city and the concept of tipping assures that the quality of the tours stays high.

A visit to Sydney isn’t complete without entering the Sydney Opera House. This world-famous building can be visited by a one hour guided tour which can be booked on their website.  The tour is interesting because a lot about the history and the construction of the building is told. Inside it’s not allowed taking pictures of the concert halls. The reason is copyright on the interior. Of course there’re expensive souvenir photos for sale of the concert halls.

Opposite the Opera House is the Harbor Bridge. In the neighbourhood next to the bridge “The Rocks” an excursion is offered to climb the bridge and a museum can be visited. For the people who are looking for adventure a walk over the top of the construction of the bridge is offered for about EUR 200,-. If you’re afraid of heights it’s better to skip this opportunity. Next to that there’re enough places in Sydney where a harness is not needed to walk around.

Next to these two important attractions, Hyde Park Barracks Museum is nice to give a look. The main theme of the museum are the convicted people who were sent to Australia and this is an important part of the country’s history.

Apart from the standard sights are the districts Manly and Bondi Beach nice to spend your time. Both are famous because of their beaches. The boat trip in the harbour of Sydney to the districts gives a nice view of the skyline, the Opera and the Harbor Bridge.

A perfect way to end the stay in Sydney is an excursion to Cockatoo Island. The Island has been used in the 19th century for prisoners and during the Second World War, it was an important shipyard. A historic place and a good alternative for shopping and restaurants.
