Beirut

Because of its size, it is possible to stay overnight a lot of nights in Beirut and make day tours by yourself. Or you can rent a driver which will cost you about USD 100 a day. I stayed apart from Beirut one night in Saïda (Sidon), one night in Byblos and two nights in Bcharre. To see other places in the evening but more important to save time because of the bad traffic in Beirut.

In Beirut you just have to walk around downtown which has been restored after the civil war which took place from 1975 until 1990. Only bullet holes and some destroyed buildings are still visible. But the parts which have been restored are well maintained and a pleasure to walk around. In the downtown area, you have the old city, the modern souks, some ruins and Mohamad al Amin Mosque. The mosque is free to enter and impressive inside. The areas around Gouraud street are also nice to walk. A visit of Beirut should contain also a stroll on the corniche and a visit to the Pigeon Rocks.
