Asunción

Asunción is the Paraguayan capital which can be reached by bus in about 5 hours from Ciudad del Este. If a local bus is taken in Argentina travellers should take care that the bus stops at the border. Because otherwise there’s a risk that Paraguay is entered without an entrance stamp in the passport. My experience is that the bus doesn’t wait for travellers who should get an entrance stamp so the last couple of kilometres to the bus station a taxi has to be taken.

The major sights in Asunción can be visited in one full day. There’s a nice old centre with a beautiful central square. Everything can be visited on foot if the accommodation is located near the main square. Important to notice is that next to some tourist areas some slums are located. Plaza Uruguaya is better to be avoided at night because in 2011 Guarani indigenous people had occupied the square.
