El Castillo

El Castillo is a small village situated in the jungle in southeast Nicaragua next to the Río San Juan. It’s a place that has a well-maintained old Spanish colonial fortress. Apart from that, there’re tours offered for spotting wildlife. During the day you can take a hike in Reserva Indio Maíz. In the evening there’s a night tour. During this tour, you can spot caymans, birds and iguanas. A stay of two nights is an absolute minimum and in the village is no ATM so bring enough cash.

Boat and guide to the Reserva Indío Maíz are USD 75 and the cayman tour is USD 50 (price 2018). Price can be split among other tourists but there might be a chance that a part you’ll have to cover by yourself. There’re not so many tourists as in the western part of Nicaragua.
