Tortuguero

Tortuguero and its national park are hard to reach because you’ll need a boat. Your best option is to book a shuttle from La Fortuna to get there. It’s a small village on the Caribbean coast. In the national park you can spot wildlife by canoe, boat, kayak. Apart from that, it’s possible to hike during the day and in the night. A guide is for the hiking not needed but recommended because you’ll see more. There’re jaguars in the national park and then it’s better to be in a group.

When I was in Tortuguero it was unfortunately not the season for turtles. Otherwise it’s also an option to look to the turtles which will lay their eggs on the beach. So the focus is to make a tour by canoe and enjoy the wildlife, a hike during the day and night. When you’re limited in time a stay of two nights is enough.

In Tortuguero there’s also the possibility to do a canopy tour which you can do if you stay one night extra. The area is quite flat that means that you’re not so high in the trees, about 17 meters. The only catch is that you have to climb that ladder of 17 meters which is when you’re afraid of heights not the best part of the excursion.
