Aveiro

The city of Aveiro is called the Venice of Portugal. Maybe Venice is slightly more crowded and much bigger. This was especially the case during my visit in November. Aveiro is well-connected by train with the cities Porto and Coimbra.

Aveiro is small and in the centre, you can walk around and no public transport is needed. The only public transport you might need is a moliceiro boat. On these traditional and colourful boats cruises are offered. You can call it a tourist attraction but in my opinion, it was recommendable in addition to the short walk in the old centre. Highlights of the cruise are the views of the historic buildings from the canals in the centre and just outside the centre of the Fabrica de Ceramica.

A short walk outside the city centre brings you to the Salinas de Aveiro. These salt flats paid an important part in the region’s history of salt production. In addition to that this site offers some nature because it is a place where a lot of birds can be observed.
