Things to do in Yerevan
Yerevan is Armenia’s capital and has quite a lot to offer in case you admire Sovjet-style architecture. It is a city with wide boulevards and compared to the rest of Armenia it feels like a resort. Because the living standard is much higher than in the rest of the country. In Yerevan, there are some important places to visit. First of all the Cascade which is huge and invites for a stroll. Inside there are a museum and escalators. The last one saves you a walk to the top of the monument. Especially during hot weather.
Another important sight is Republic Square and nearby is the traditional Vernissage Market. Apart from all the architecture the Armenian genocide memorial and its museum is a must-visit place. Tsitsernakaberd is the name of this monument which is just outside central Yerevan. In case you want to use public transport a metro is about 1,5 kilometres from the entrance. Another option is that you walk just to this monument from the city center.
Armenia produces also brandy which is quite well-known. In Yerevan, there are two factories which you can visit. After the guided tour you can have a tasting of their brandy. I was in the Ararat factory and museum. Just across the street, you can find the other one, NOY.
Connections
Yerevan is really centrally located in Armenia and has connections to most towns in the country. There are good connections to nearby Garni and Geghard or Khor Virap. Destinations further afield are connected by shared taxis, like Goris. Dilijan and Sevan are connected by minibus and are about 1,5 and a one-hour drive away from the capital.
