Things to do in Bandar Seri Begawan

The Sultan of Brunei is in charge and is one of the richest persons on earth. During a visit to Brunei first thing noticed is that some buildings like mosques and also a six-star hotel have an excessive appearance. Apart from that Brunei looks quite similar to the east of Malaysia (Sarawak).

Brunei’s capital is called Bandar Seri Begawan In short, it’s called BSB. You can visit several mosques in this capital. The Jame’Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is relatively modest compared to the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque. Both mosques have golden domes, the surrounding areas are very clean and look impressive.

When there is a need for more local culture a look at Kampong Ayer is recommended. In this area, about 10 % of the population of Brunei lives in houses and buildings which are built on poles in the Brunei River. There is an opportunity to take a tour by speedboat through Kampong Ayer which gives an impression of local life. The Sultan might be one of the richest persons on earth, life in Kampong Ayer is simple.

Besides local life, there’s the Brunei Museum. It displays the history of Brunei and also vehicles and belongings of the sultan are presented.

Connections

Brunei is really recommended as a day tour. All sights mentioned here can be visited in one day from Miri in Malaysia if you have a car and driver. It is a long but rewarding day and arrival in Miri will be late in the evening.
