Things to do in Tunis

From Tunis you can visit quite a lot of sights on day tours which are Carthage, Sidi Bou Saïd, Bizerte and Dougga.

Inside Tunis, you can explore the old medina and give a visit to the famous Bardo Museum with its mosaics and other antiquities. An impressive museum that got some wrong attention after a terrorist attack in 2015. It is considered to be the first museum of Africa.

Things to do around Tunis

Carthage

From the centre of Tunis, it is just about 25 kilometres by train to visit the most important Roman ruins of North Africa, Carthage. It is a site with different ruins which you can explore in one full day. During my visit, the Carthage museum had been closed. In general, you see most tourists visit the Baths of Antoninus on an organized tour. Apart from these ruins the rest of the sights were not crowded.

Sidi Bou Saïd

Sidi Bou Saïd is just a short train journey outside Tunis. It’s well-known for traditional white houses. To be honest it was also a small tourist trap because there were many souvenir shops. For me a little disappointment. Because the village is not really impressive compared to other places which I had visited before.

Connections

Tunis is well-connected to most of Tunisia. By train for example to Sousse, El Jem, or Sfax. There are bus connections to Bizerte and Kairouan.
