Introduction to Honduras

During an organized tour through Mexico, Guatemala en Belize in 2008 I’ve made a short visit for two nights at Copán Ruinas in Honduras. This is the only place I’ve been in Honduras and it’s one of the highlights with the Mayan ruins.

Copán

From the village Copán Ruinas, just across the border with Guatemala in Honduras the Mayan ruins of Copán can be visited. The ruins are located a couple of kilometres outside the village and a visit of for max. three hours is more than sufficient. Because Chitzen Itza and Palenque in Mexico and Tikal in Guatemala are much bigger. But the ruins are still worth to see because of the location in the jungle. In 2008 you could notice at the ruins some soldiers which had to take care of the safety.

In the village Copán Ruinas they take care of the safety as well. The local bank has a lot of security like in Guatemala. But in Guatemala everyone was friendly. In Honduras my experience in restaurants was not very positive, because service was slow and the staff was not friendly. In short, my impression was that Honduras still has a lot to develop in tourism.

Outside Copán Ruinas you can choose for horse riding or visit a hot spring. The first choice I did in 2008 and it was nice. Especially the road to the hot spring give some special memories. Because a truck was crashed and that had to be solved in the Hondurese way, which was not efficient.
