Berat
From Tirana it takes about two hours by local minibus to get in Berat. Like with also other places in Albania, there are two conditions which are important to remember. First of all, is public transport the best in the morning because the bus leaves when there are enough people. So day trips are less comfortable to organize if the travel time one way is two hours or more. Secondly is the quality of the roads hit or miss. It can be brand new or very traditional. Traditional means that speeds of more than 20 kilometres an hour on parts are not possible because of the road conditions.
Berat is worth to stay at least one but also two nights. The old village is not too big but well maintained and the castle gives a beautiful view of the surrounding area. There are plenty of chances to walk around only during the heath it’s recommended to leave the flip flops at your accommodation. The streets are very slippery especially the road to the summit of the hill which goes in the direction of the castle. Then there might be a possibility that Albanian hospitality is experienced in a different way.
From Berat it’s possible to make a day trip to the Bogove waterfalls which are about 30 kilometres from the city. Good for refreshment but the walk to the waterfalls is not easy because at two places the hiking trail is quite adventurous. So do this trip with more people and this is easy to arrange at your accommodation.
