Just outside Latacunga is the Cotopaxi National Park which offers plenty of possibilities to hike. In Latacunga it’s possible to join a day tour or hire a guide and driver. Expect to pay between USD 70 – 80 if you book it by yourself (price 2018). When there are two or more the price is USD 40 each person. This is including a 4×4 which is needed on the bumpy gravel road in the national park. During the day tour, you make a short hike near a lake at about 3.700 meters altitude and a more difficult one from 4.500 to just over 4.800 meters of altitude to the Jose Rivas Refuge. After this, you can go higher to visit the glacier when the weather is clear.
