Montevideo

Your trip to Uruguay starts probably in the capital Montevideo. From the airport terminal, there are expensive cabs to downtown Montevideo. It is about 20 kilometres and by that time the taxi fare was about EUR 40,- of those airport cabs. Because of this, it is better to arrange transport with your accommodation or hold an official taxi which will cost you about half the price. Just cross the parking lot at the airport.

In a day a lot of Montevideo’s highlights can be visited because everything is in walking distance. During the evening it is recommendable to stay around people. Because there were many quiet and empty streets in downtown Montevideo which didn’t invite for a walk during that time. During the day it’s not too bad and the only thing to worry about is the cold weather in August. It feels like a Dutch climate and the result of that is downtown Montevideo is quiet early in the morning. It gets busier after 9 AM on the weekend.

First of all different historical buildings can be admired downtown. Palacio Salvo next to the Plaza Independencia is regarding its size one of the highlights. Under this square, the Artigas Mausoleum dedicated to Uruguay hero José Artigas is located.

Important too while travelling is of course delicious food. Mercado del Puerto offers good food en sociability and is an excellent place for lunch. After lunch, a visit can be made to the Museo del Carnaval. A walk along the coastal road Rambla Francia is a perfect end of the day.

After Montevideo my trip continued to Colonia del Sacramento.
